You need to submit Form N-400, Application for Naturalization, to acquire U.S. citizenship. After USCIS reviews the application, they will notify you of an interview date. After completing the interview with a USCIS officer and passing the civics test on U.S. history and the form of U.S. government, applicants are eligible to attend a naturalization ceremony and become U.S. citizens.

Depending on how you obtained your green card, the requirements for naturalization may differ.

General Requirements for Naturalization
  1. You must be at least 18 years old.
  2. It must have been more than 5 years since you became a U.S. green card holder.
  3. You must have resided in the U.S. for more than 30 months during the last 5 years.
  4. You must not have resided outside the U.S. for more than 1 continuous year during the last 5 years. If you have resided outside the U.S. for more than 6 months but less than 1 year, you must prove that your continuous residence in the U.S. was maintained.
  5. You must have resided in the state where you will be sworn in for more than 3 months immediately before applying for naturalization.
  6. You must demonstrate good moral character, such as having no criminal history since becoming a U.S. green card holder.
  7. You must pass the civics test and demonstrate the ability to read, write, and speak English.
Requirements for Naturalization Based on Marriage to a U.S. Citizen
  1. You must be at least 18 years old.
  2. It must have been more than 3 years since you became a U.S. green card holder.
  3. You must have continuously maintained a marital relationship with your U.S. citizen spouse.
  4. You must have resided in the U.S. for more than 18 months during the last 3 years.
  5. You must not have resided outside the U.S. for more than 1 continuous year during the last 3 years. If you have resided outside the U.S. for more than 6 months but less than 1 year, you must prove that your continuous residence in the U.S. was maintained.
  6. You must have resided in the state where you will be sworn in for more than 3 months immediately before applying for naturalization.
  7. You must demonstrate good moral character, such as having no criminal history since becoming a U.S. green card holder.
  8. You must pass the civics test and demonstrate the ability to read, write, and speak English.
