Applying for U.S. Citizenship
You need to submit Form N-400, Application for Naturalization, to acquire U.S. citizenship. After USCIS reviews the application, they will notify you of an interview date. After completing the interview with a USCIS officer and passing the civics test on U.S. history and the form of U.S. government, applicants are eligible to attend a naturalization ceremony and become U.S. citizens.
Depending on how you obtained your green card, the requirements for naturalization may differ.
- You must be at least 18 years old.
- It must have been more than 5 years since you became a U.S. green card holder.
- You must have resided in the U.S. for more than 30 months during the last 5 years.
- You must not have resided outside the U.S. for more than 1 continuous year during the last 5 years. If you have resided outside the U.S. for more than 6 months but less than 1 year, you must prove that your continuous residence in the U.S. was maintained.
- You must have resided in the state where you will be sworn in for more than 3 months immediately before applying for naturalization.
- You must demonstrate good moral character, such as having no criminal history since becoming a U.S. green card holder.
- You must pass the civics test and demonstrate the ability to read, write, and speak English.
- You must be at least 18 years old.
- It must have been more than 3 years since you became a U.S. green card holder.
- You must have continuously maintained a marital relationship with your U.S. citizen spouse.
- You must have resided in the U.S. for more than 18 months during the last 3 years.
- You must not have resided outside the U.S. for more than 1 continuous year during the last 3 years. If you have resided outside the U.S. for more than 6 months but less than 1 year, you must prove that your continuous residence in the U.S. was maintained.
- You must have resided in the state where you will be sworn in for more than 3 months immediately before applying for naturalization.
