Applying for a Reentry Permit
If U.S. green card holders leave the U.S. for more than six months but less than one year, they may face additional security checks at U.S. borders and may be asked whether they intend to give up their green cards. If they leave the U.S. for more than one year, they may be regarded as having abandoned their green cards.
Therefore, U.S. green card holders who plan to leave the U.S. for more than one year need to apply for a reentry permit in order to maintain their permanent resident status.
Reentry permit applications must be submitted to USCIS while applicants are residing in the U.S. However, applicants may leave the U.S. while their applications are being reviewed by USCIS. If requested, they must appear at a USCIS office for fingerprinting. Reentry permits may be delivered to the applicant’s U.S. address, a U.S. embassy or consulate abroad, or the applicant’s attorney’s address.
